Which national chains operate 24-hour pharmacies — and which actually staff a pharmacist around the clock.

The chains with real 24-hour pharmacy coverage

  1. Walgreens operates the largest 24-hour pharmacy footprint in the United States, roughly 400 locations concentrated in major metros. Many keep a 24-hour pharmacy counter staffed.
  2. CVS runs several hundred 24-hour locations. The pharmacy counter at most 24-hour CVS stores still keeps standard daytime hours; only a subset run a 24-hour pharmacy counter.
  3. Walmart Pharmacy never operated a 24-hour pharmacy counter, even when many Supercenters were open 24 hours. Pharmacy is daytime-only, generally 9:00am–7:00pm.

The other major chains — Rite Aid, Costco, Kroger, Publix — do not operate 24-hour pharmacy counters at scale. Their stores typically close between 9:00pm and 11:00pm.

CVS 24-hour

CVS operates several hundred 24-hour locations clustered in major metros (Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Miami, New York).

Walgreens 24-hour

Walgreens still operates roughly 400 24-hour stores nationwide, the largest 24-hour pharmacy footprint of any chain.

Rite Aid 24-hour

Rite Aid does not operate true 24-hour stores at scale.

Walmart Pharmacy 24-hour

Most Walmart Supercenters returned to closing overnight after 2020 and the Walmart Pharmacy counter has never operated 24/7.

Costco Pharmacy 24-hour

Costco does not operate any 24-hour locations.

Kroger Pharmacy 24-hour

A handful of Kroger and banner stores stay open 24 hours in the Midwest and South, but the pharmacy counter follows standard daytime hours at all locations.

Publix Pharmacy 24-hour

Publix does not operate 24-hour stores.
